…Coming out is itself its own kind of body modification as it changes the way others see you. Often with horns on your head instead of your shoulders.

Jumpstarting a small press and magazine is a labor of love. We're so pleased to release our first publication: The Manticore's Vow, now available in all bookish places! If you love novellas, adventure tales, and badass femme protags, you'll want to add this book to your TBR pile. We're ready to add more writers to our new release list. Please send us your novellas! We are particularly interested in receiving more stories by and about marginalized voices. One of the reasons I chose to start with novellas is that they represent what we love: stories that don't quite fit into longer forms. Holly Lyn Walrath Managing Editor

Popular Stories This Month

Do you love cats? Of course you do, because they are amazing little balls of fluff. This month, John Tuttle brings us a short hiss-tory of our feline companions in science fiction film. With their graceful maneuverability and attractiveness, cats have found their way into science fiction plots throughout film history, whether as the random “guinea pig” for a mad scientist’s latest experiment or a reluctant stowaway who fights Kree soldiers in space. Kaylee Craig brought us another review, this time of Black Mirror Season 5. Once again, this revolutionary SF series asks once again how technology’s ability to break down boundaries once previously held as sacred will change our psychological makeup in more ways than one. From cell phone addiction to celebrity fangirling to virtual reality, the latest season of Black Mirror is a mind-altering experience. We're stoked to be able to promote the work of SFF authors like Caitlin Starling, who brought us an essay on her new book, The Luminous Dead. Sarah Gailey called it “A harrowing, merciless descent into the human psyche.” The Luminous Dead is available now from Harper Voyager. In personal essays, this month we feature a complex piece by Presley Thomas, who explores the intersection between Project Runway, queerness, and body modification. "There isn’t a uniform for being gay. There isn’t a brand or line of clothing. I didn’t have the ability to modify my body to show my inward self."
